Deep Rock Galactic now has its own official heavy metal song, called—you guessed it—Rock and Stone-
Watch On
After years of gleefully saying “Rock and Stone!” to each other, Deep Rock Galactic fans can now finally sing it too. Italian metal band Wind Rose have collaborated with the DRG team to produce a song named for the iconic catchphrase, with a delightfully weird music video.
Dwarf-themed heavy metal is apparently Wind Rose’s bread and butter—past singles include Diggy Diggy Hole and Mine Mine Mine!, and their latest album (which you’ll find Rock and Stone on) is called Trollslayer (referencing a caste of dwarves from Warhammer Fantasy). Hey, I respect anyone who’s found their niche.
The video stars the band in impressive dwarven regalia, singing to an audience of Deep Rock Galactic miners, and going on their own adventure to dig on Hoxxes IV and fight swarms of …
Bubsy the Bobcat creator & Bend studio co-founder Mike Berlyn dies at 73-
Mike Berlyn, the designer, programmer and writer best-known for the creation of Bubsy the Bobcat, has died at the age of 73. Berlyn had a long career in the games industry, starting with 1981’s Oo-Topos, before going on to work at storied studios including Infocom and Accolade, as well as co-founding Blank, Berlin & Co (also known as Eidetic, and which would become Bend Studio). Berlyn’s other pursuits included writing novels, founding a book publisher, and starting a jazz band called Hot Mustard.
While Berlyn worked on many notable games over his time, and his credits list runs into the dozens, it was the creation of Bubsy the Bobcat that broke through during that mid-’90s period when the industry wanted mascots. Game Developer spoke with Berlyn in 2005 about the traje…
Harebrained Schemes is independent again- Paradox parts ways with the studio less than a week after confirming major layoffs earlier this year-
Less than a week after saying that sales of turn-based tactics game The Lamplighters League were “a big disappointment” and confirming major layoffs at developer Harebrained Schemes, Paradox Interactive has announced that it has “decided to part ways” with the studio. Paradox said the split was a mutual decision, “stemming from each party’s strategic and creative priorities,” and that HBS will officially be independent again on January 1, 2024.
“Paradox has refocused its strategy towards its core niches within strategy and management games with endless qualities,” Paradox COO Charlotta Nilsson said. “We and HBS’ leadership have been discussing what would happen after the release of The Lamplighters League, but a new project or sequel in the same genre was not in line w…
Dawn of War 1 and 2 have been re-released as anniversary editions including all the DLC
Relic Entertainment’s 2004 and 2009 real-time strategy magnum opuses, Dawn of War and Dawn of War 2, have been re-released as anniversary editions for their 15th and 20th years of real-time-strategerizing. The new anniversary editions, available on Steam, include all the DLC and extras released for the two games over the years. That’s especially nice for Dawn of War 2, which had a metric ton of DLC and skins and codes and wargear and exclusive bonuses by the end of its life cycle.
Both games are also on sale, at 80% off—or $7 and $10 respectively.
So far the two games have released on Steam in this new edition—no word on whether or not people who own them via other platforms like GOG will get an upgrade. Also I really doubt that Sega is going to honor an upgrad…
Intel’s chip foundry keeps losing billions of dollars but CEO Gelsinger says this is it, this year is ‘the trough’-
As part of Intel’s internal reshuffling, separating its chip-making facilities into Intel Foundry and everything else as Intel Products, the company filed a Form 8-K with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. In this document, the full picture of how well the foundry service was performing became clear and with operating losses of $7 billion in 2023, more than $2B worse than the previous year, it’s clear that Intel has a lot of work to do to turn that around.
Intel’s CEO Pat Gelsinger went through the details of it all in an earnings call (transcript via SeekingAlpha), pointing out that one significant mistake that Intel made was taking far too long to switch to EUV (extreme ultraviolet) lithography, the method that all of the latest CPUs and GPUs are fabricated wi…
Intel has ‘no plans’ to bring frame-rate boosting APO feature to older 13th and 12th Gen CPUs-
With the introduction of its 14th Gen processors just last month, Intel introduced a new feature called Application Optimizer, or APO for short. It’s a new scheduling technology to help boost frame rates in select games—very few select games, in fact, as there are just two that support APO today. But that’s not the only way this feature is limited: It’s a 14th Gen exclusive and Intel says it has no plans to roll it out to older chips.
APO is supported in Rainbow Six: Siege and Metro Exodus and Intel says you can expect up to a 16% increase in performance in the latter with APO enabled. That’s pretty much backed up by figures from Hardware Unboxed.
The channel also spoke to Intel about further support for older chips, seeing as 12th, 13th, and 14th Gen Intel processors …
Magic- The Gathering Arena is finally coming to Steam this month-
Magic: The Gathering Arena first arrived on PC in 2017 as a beta that was downloadable from the Wizards of the Coast website. It left beta two years later, was added to the Epic Games Store in 2020, and got a mobile port in 2021, but only now have the Serra Angels descended in a shining chorus to announce that unto us is come a savior: a version of Arena on Steam.
The original collectible card game, Magic: The Gathering remains one of the best in the genre. (Though I still stan for Faeria as well.) While more complex than the aggressively streamlined Hearthstone, that complexity is what makes its wild combos and surprising mid-match turnarounds possible. It’s well-supported too, and unlikely to go into stasis as some of our other favorite digital CCGs have in the past.

Intel rumoured to be scaling back its next-gen Battlemage GPU-
Let’s start with a fact. Intel’s next-gen graphics architecture is codenamed Battlemage. Beyond that it’s all speculation, but the latest fuel on the bonfire of rumours suggests that Intel is scaling back its ambitions with Battlemage. If the latest scuttlebutt is to be believed, Battlemage will actually have fewer execution units than Intel existing top graphics card, the Intel Arc A770.
The new info comes from YouTube channel Moore’s Law is Dead, which has a hit-and-miss record when it comes to rumours and previously claimed that the entire Intel Arc graphics project had been cancelled. MLID has revised that prediction and now claims Arc is “effectively cancelled” but that at least one Battlemage GPU will be released.
According to MLID, up to three GPU SKUs for Battlemage …
Jagged Alliance 3 will have mod support and co-op, thank goodness-
The latest dev diary for upcoming turn-based merc-manager Jagged Alliance 3 outlines a couple of interesting features. The first is mod support, which is particularly relevant given the way modders kept Jagged Alliance 2 alive. Here’s our own Evan Lahti singing the praises of the 1.13 mod, which “enhances what’s there, upping the maximum resolution, adding hundreds of new weapons—including gratifying super-items like Ghillie suits and depleted-uranium bullets—reorganizing hotkeys and altering the AI so that enemies flank better, take cover more often, climb onto roofs, and utilize suppressive fire.”
Jagged Alliance 3 will receive mod support as part of a post-launch update, the dev diary explains: “Modders will have access to the tools we use internally to create conte…
A free Vermintide 2 update adds three dwarven delights from the first game-
A free update has remastered an entire DLC from the first Vermintide and released it (again, for free) for every Warhammer: Vermintide 2 owner to enjoy. The three remastered levels are Karak Azgaraz, a dwarven fortress under siege and occupation by villainous Skaven rat-men.
The three classic Vermintide adventures are updated to fit in with Vermintide 2’s mechanics, including challenges and rewards for the game. That means there are new challenges from cousin Okri to be overcome, lest you become complacent. There are also paintings for your keep and portrait frames to be won.
“In Karak Azgaraz, you and your party are sent to Khazid Kro to help a struggling dwarf war party sabotage the Skaven army. Traverse through the Dwarfen stronghold and turn the tide in your favor …
Cult of the Lamb’s next major content update will be an interactive digital comic- ‘Where all your choices will take you on a colourful adventure’-
Watch On
Cult of the Lamb’s upcoming major content update will count towards your required reading as developer Massive Monster shared plans to release an interactive digital comic.
“A brand new interactive digital comic, where your choices will take you on a colourful adventure with new secret quests, Follower forms, outfits, and decorations for your beloved Cult!” the devs say in a Steam update post. Some of the new Follower forms include a panda, a blue echidna, and what looks like a yellow hippo (but it could also be a guinea pig—honestly, I’ve never been able to figure these guys out).
The Pilgrim Comic Pack will be illustrated by Carles Dalmau, an artist who has worked on Cult of the Lamb and the sci-fi horror from Frictional Games, SOMA. It will also…
Karlach teams up with Baldur’s Gate 3’s sex noise man to raise money for a good cause- SpecialEffect, which helps create kit and software for physically disabled gamers-
As announced earlier this month, SpecialEffect—a charity we’re proud to have teamed up with before—is running a special stream to help raise money for physically disabled gamers.
Samantha Béart is the voice of Karlach in Baldur’s Gate 3, an exceptional talent who lent their voice to a beloved big tiefling lady (who just so happens to be our favourite to date). Then there’s Alex Jordan, a storied voice actor in his own right who, uh, also made all the sex noises in Larian’s groundbreaking RPG. Béart announced a concrete time for the event on Twitter today—and the whole video’s definitely worth a watch.
“I spent hundreds of hours with the team to craft Karlach into the character you all know and love,” Béart proudly announces,…
NYT Connections hint and answers today- September 28 (#109)-
Whether you want to organise today’s NYT Connections board in a snap just for the fun of it, or because you’re one bad guess away from losing, you’ll find every answer for the September 28 (#109) game right here. We’ve got a full selection of hints too if you need them, as well as general advice on how to play.
Maybe it was the way they landed after a few clicks of the shuffle button, maybe it was the excellent cup of coffee I’d drained a little too quickly, but whatever it was, today’s Connections went down without much of a fight today. I’d like to pretend it’ll be the same tomorrow, but I don’t think I’m that lucky.
NYT Connections hint today: Thursday, September 28

Google researchers find novel way of turning a single photo of a human into AI-generated video good enough to make you think ‘this might go badly’-
Google researchers have found a way to create video versions of humans generated from just a single still image. This enables it to do things like, generate a video of someone speaking from input text, or changing a person’s mouth movements to match an audio track in a different language to the one originally spoken. It also feels like a slippery slope into identity theft and misinformation, but what’s AI if not with a hint of frightening consequences.
The tech itself is rather interesting: it’s called Vlogger by the Google researchers that published the paper. In it the authors (Enric Corona et al) offer up various examples of how the AI takes a single input image of a human—in this case, I believe mostly AI-generated humans—and with an audio file produces both facial…
The first of what will one day be thousands of character presets to hit Starfield’s Nexus Mods page is, naturally, George Costanza-
Every Bethesda game’s character creation menu has witnessed some horrors in its time. From attempts to make Anakin Skywalker in Skyrim, all the way to some of the most terrifying Fallout 4 faces that were enough to break the bathroom mirror. And I’m sure you’ve been witness to plenty of stars made in Bethesda games, too—maybe even attempted some yourself. It does take some effort to get it right, though.
More to the point, I don’t want to have to spend hours in the Starfield character creator to live out my dream of playing Seinfeld characters in space. Thanks to this new Nexus Mods character preset, that dream can become a reality, minus all the hard graft.
Yep, the first character preset for the game appears to be George Costanza. For……
The best 4TB SSD you can buy is on sale right now for the cheapest it’s ever been-
The WD Black SN850X is the best NVMe SSD you can buy right now, and both the 4TB and 2TB models are on sale. Walmart’s got the chunky 4TB drive for the all-time low price of only $341; the 2TB version is just $155 at Newegg. There are many SSD deals daily, but a sale on our favorite NVMe? That’s too good to be true! (It is true, though. Promise.)
The SN850X is pretty much the best Gen 4 SSD on the block, solving a major issue with its impressive predecessor, the SN850, by running so much cooler. Some might say that it’s the SN850X’s ‘X’ factor. I’m sorry.
The 4TB and 2TB SN850X manage a speedy 7,300MB/s read and 6,600MB/s write speed. As for performance, they’re both a great all-around drive that would make a killer upgrade for your storage. For gaming, this means you’…
